How to Switch to Instagram Business Account: Guide

SMM Hub — smm-hub.com 28.06.2026 4 min

To switch to an Instagram business account, open Settings and privacy → Account type and tools → Switch to professional account, pick Business and choose a category. It's free, usually takes under a minute, and you can switch back to a personal profile anytime.

Personal, Creator or Business: the difference

Instagram has three account types, and all of them are free. Your choice depends on why you run the profile.

  • Personal — the basic private profile without advanced stats or business tools.
  • Creator — for bloggers, influencers and public figures: flexible contact buttons, detailed audience insights, convenient subscription management.
  • Business — for brands, shops and services: contact buttons, insights, ads and integrations. Note: business accounts can face limits on using popular music in posts due to licensing.

Both professional types unlock roughly the same set of analytics and promotion, so choose by format: a personal brand fits Creator, a company fits Business.

How to switch to a business account: step by step

Menu wording can vary slightly between app versions, but the flow is the same everywhere.

  1. Open your profile and tap the menu icon (three lines) in the top right.
  2. Go to Settings and privacy.
  3. Find the Account type and tools section (or For professionals).
  4. Tap Switch to professional account.
  5. Select Business (or Creator if you run a personal brand).
  6. Pick a category that describes your activity — you can show or hide it on the profile.
  7. Optionally add contact details and finish the setup.

After that, new tabs appear: insights, promotion tools and contact buttons.

What you unlock with a professional account

The switch opens tools that a personal profile doesn't have:

  • Insights — reach, impressions, demographics and audience activity.
  • Contact buttons — Call, Email, Directions right on the profile.
  • Promotions (ads) — launch paid campaigns without a separate ads manager.
  • Post scheduling via professional tools and third-party services.

If you want to learn how to read these numbers, it helps to start with the basics of promotion — for example, our guide on how to grow Instagram turns insights into action.

Third-party tools: keep your account safe

Plenty of add-on apps orbit professional accounts — schedulers, "advanced analytics," design helpers. A few rules that protect you from hacks and bans:

  • Never enter your Instagram login and password on third-party sites. Legitimate services connect through the official Facebook/Instagram login (OAuth), not by asking for your password directly. If a site wants your credentials, that's a red flag.
  • Apps that claim to show "who saved or viewed your profile" don't work. Instagram doesn't share that data with outside developers, so such services are either ad bait or attempts to steal access. You can't see who viewed your profile; only Stories views are visible, and only to you inside the app for 24 hours.
  • Review permissions under Settings → Security → Apps and websites and revoke anything you don't use.

How to switch back to a personal account

If the professional format doesn't fit, switching back is just as easy:

  1. Go to Settings and privacy.
  2. Open Account type and tools.
  3. Tap Switch to personal account and confirm.

An honest note: for some users, switching to a professional account can slightly change how reach behaves — algorithms handle content from personal and business profiles a bit differently. There's no guaranteed effect either way, so if privacy is your goal, a personal profile remains a valid option too.

Your insights revealed weak spots — what next

Once insights are on, you can see where the profile lags: low reach, weak engagement under new posts. There are different ways to lift your base metrics, and one of them is starter services for a kickstart. We offer free Instagram services that may help warm up a fresh account, but this is just one tool and it doesn't replace quality content. Before ordering anything, weigh the risks honestly — we covered them in our piece on whether it is safe to buy followers.

In short

  • The path: Settings → Account type and tools → Switch to professional account → Business or Creator → category.
  • All three account types are free; you can switch back to personal anytime.
  • A professional account unlocks insights, contact buttons, ads and scheduling (Business has a music nuance).
  • Never enter your Instagram password on third-party sites; "who viewed your profile" apps don't work.
  • Reach may behave differently in some cases — no guarantees, follow your own goals.
